CAMPO ALEGRE, Brazil 10oz

Region: Campo Das Vertentes, Minas Gerais
Producer: Henrique Dias Cambraia
Varietal: Yellow Bourbon
Process: Natural
Elevation: 1200m

This natural processed yellow bourbon lot from Fazenda Campo Alegre is an exciting glimpse into how the coffee industry is changing in Brazil today. This cup bursts with fruit - plum, dried apricot, black cherry - while a heavier body and malt chocolate finish remind you it's Brazilian origin.

Historically the much of the coffees coming out of Brazil have been one dimensional, low acidity with a chocolate and nutty flavor profile. As the world leader in coffee production, Brazil's coffee growing has always been about volume first and quality second. However the game is changing in Brazil, and our trip through Minas Gerais in 2023 really opened our eyes to the efforts happening on the ground to change the coffee and in turn the perception around it. Closer attention to picking, sorting, and processing have yielded really fruit forward and complex cups, as exhibited with this lot from Henrique's farm Campo Alegre.

Henrique is a founder of Sancoffee, a co-op of farmers from the Campo Das Vertentes region of Minas Gerais. The co-op was formed in 2000 and has grown into an industry leader in sustainability. Today, Sancoffee helps process, mill and export coffees from over 300 surrounding growers. Sancoffee's structure and efforts in social, economic, and environmental initiatives have led them to become a certified B-corp, as well as carbon neutral Rainforest Alliance certified. We had the opportunity to visit Sancoffee's headquarters and meet many of the co-op's members and were blown away by the dedication to quality and sustainability.
