The THIRD annual Halloween dark roast, people! Who saw that coming?? For year three, we’re keeping the trend of a nod to a horror movie I love going, plus we’re keeping the trend of 2024 and coffee with a playlist going!
This year’s dark roast is called Halloween Mask, complete with the three masks on the label, paying homage to one of my all-time favourite “horror” movies, Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Sure, when people ask about my favourite movies, I always say Halloween, but that’s a lie. While John Carpenter’s Halloween is a great movie, it’s this terribly stupid move, the third installment in the franchise and the only one NOT featuring Michael Myers, that I truly love and watch every Samhain. I don’t want to spoil the movie, but if you’ve never seen it, you must! You absolutely must because it’s just bonkers! There are masks that eat kids’ faces, there, I spoiled it but you just have to watch it!
To be honest, though, the movie came second because the playlist idea came first. I wanted to finish off the year with all three special releases having a playlist, but since I spotlighted Tegan and Sara for Pride Month, I wanted to find a way to do the same for my other co-favourite band, Peach Kelli Pop, and that’s when I thought about their song, “Halloween Mask”! Suddenly, I thought about Halloween III and it was kismet, I tell ya.
Finally, it was important to me to finally do a Salvadoran coffee. The District is home to a thriving Salvadoran community; I partially grew up in the heavily Salvadoran neighbourhood of Columbia Heights; and I married a Salvadoran-American. She’s a big lover of the fall aesthetic and Halloween is my favourite holiday, and more importantly, she’s supported my career in coffee through the thickest of thick and thinnest of thin. It felt time to dedicate this release to her as well.
So grab a bag, brew a cup, share with friends, put on the playlist, and watch Halloween III. That sounds like the perfect way to turn the wheel of the year to Samhain. Happy Halloween, yall!
