For this year, it was important to me to continue a celebration of the martyrs of the modern-day Queer Liberation movement, with last June’s tribute to our elders who passed during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, to this year’s honoring and remembering black trans women of DC and the area who lost their lives to senseless and hateful violence.

Say Her Name, our 2026 Pride Month special release, is dedicated to all the black trans women in our local communities and nationwide. According to the Human Rights Campaign’s 2024 study, “The Epidemic of Violence Against the Transgender and Gender-Expansive Community in the US”, the HRC found that half of 2024’s deaths due to violence were made up of black trans women. Trans misogynoir, or misogyny towards black trans women, is far beyond a disproportionate rate.

This coffee is dedicated to sisters like Tyra Hunter, killed at age 24 in a hit and run in Southeast DC and perhaps could have survived if first responders hadn’t mocked her and delayed all possible efforts to get her to a hospital in1995; Ashanti Carmon, shot and killed at age 27 in Fairmont Heights, MD in March 2019; Zoe Sparks, shot and killed at age 23 also in Fairmont Heights, only three blocks from where Ashanti Carmon was killed, in June 2019; Dream Johnson, shot and killed at age 28 in Northeast DC in July 2025; A’nee Johnson, killed at age 30 after being shoved into the street and hit by a car in October 2023. Our 2026 Pride Month release, Say Her Name, is just like these sisters: strong enough to face every day but with a flair and panache to make every day more special.

Black trans women and all trans women must be protected and defended.
