DUKUNDEKAWA WASHED, Rwanda

GREEN APPLE | LEMON | ALMOND

Region: Gakenke
Producer:
Dukundekawa Musasa Cooperative
Altitude: 2200 meters
Varietal: Red Bourbon
Process: Washed

This fully washed red bourbon from Dukundekawa Musasa is a bright, juicy cup that showcases the clean, fruit-forward profile we love from Rwanda. Expect crisp notes of green apple and pear up front, rounded out by lemony acidity and a subtle toasted almond sweetness that lingers on the finish. It’s vibrant, complex, and refreshingly balanced.

This is our first year working with the Dukundekawa Musasa Cooperative, and we’re thrilled to be introduced to their work through the One Acre Fund, a social enterprise that supports millions of smallholder farmers across sub-Saharan Africa. One Acre Fund puts farmers first in everything they do—equipping farming families with high-quality inputs, training, and access to markets to help them thrive. Their work has helped farmers grow more food, plant more trees, and increase incomes—all while building stronger, more resilient communities.

In Rwanda, One Acre Fund works closely with coffee growers to provide a complete bundle of support: productivity-boosting inputs, training, working capital, and connections to buyers. That’s how we found this coffee—and we’re grateful for the introduction.

Dukundekawa is a standout cooperative. With more than 1,000 farmer-members, they’ve built a reputation not just for quality, but for impact. From starting a coffee school for the next generation to donating dairy cows to local families, their work is deeply rooted in sustainability and community development. Their partnership with One Acre Fund has helped further expand access to seedlings, shade trees, and farm inputs, so their members can continue producing top-tier coffee while investing in their future.

The high elevations of Gakenke, its rich volcanic loam soil, and heirloom bourbon varietals all come together to create ideal growing conditions. Dukundekawa’s precise processing—whether washed or natural—highlights the best of this terroir. Both coffees are Fair Trade and Organic Certified, and both are a testament to the care, rigor, and collaboration behind every cup.

We’re also excited to share that we brought in both the washed and natural processed versions of this coffee. Tasting them side-by-side is an incredible way to explore how processing influences flavor. While this washed lot is bright, clean, and crisp, the natural brings a funkier, fruitier profile to the table. We’re loving both—but they’re very different expressions of the same crop, and that contrast is part of what makes coffee so fascinating.
